Best Natural Mascara: The Best and the Not-So-Great

I have been using (and loving) green beauty products for about three years now. So, I kind of have a lot to say about what I have tried, hence this best natural mascara review. One beauty product I could not live without is mascara. Without a doubt, it is my go-to makeup product and if I don't use anything else thats OK, but mascara is a must. So when I started to make the switch to natural mascaras, I was hesitant to give up my tried and true Lancome. In fact it was the last conventional product I made the switch over to when I first began this journey.

This post continues to get updated as I try new mascaras, this was last updated as of November 2021.

Before we chat about the best natural mascara brands I love, lets talk first about why I use natural products.

My top three reasons for going natural

  1. Hormone disruptors: Certain ingredients are known endocrine disruptors. Our endocrine system refers to a "collection of glands that produce hormones that help to regulate our metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood, among other things." When we routinely use ingredients that are known to mess with our body in this way we may do any of the following: alter the production of hormones (either increasing or decreasing them), they may imitate other hormones, interfere with hormone signalling and even accumulate in our organs that produce hormones. When it comes to beauty and personal care products, watch for the following: phthalates (this is hidden in fragrance), formaldehyde (found in nail products, fake eyelash adhesives and hair dye), parabens, DEA/TEA/MEA (Ethanolamines), Diethylene glycol (or DEG) (found in fragrance and sometimes in glycerin and propylene glycol). One of the biggest things you can do is avoid items with fragrance. Fragrance is considered a trade secret in the beauty industry and they are not required to disclose what exactly is in them. There are more ingredients to watch for, you can find a good list here
  2. Lenient regulations: It saddens me that the regulations on cosmetics in both the U.S. and Canada is so lenient, especially when compared to the EU which has far more banned ingredients. The main issue I have with how ingredients and chemicals are approved is that they are not considered from a cumulative perspective. The buildup of these accumulated ingredients over time is what presents a bigger problem. The average woman uses 12 products daily totalling 168 unique ingredients. As I discussed above, fragrance or "parfum" is a term that allows a complete loophole for the cosmetic industry as they do not need to disclose what is included in this. And products such as toothpaste, antiperspirants, and anti aging lotions are not considered cosmetics which excludes them from following any cosmetic regulation altogether. 
  3. The Earth: What you choose to put on your body and throw away goes somewhere. Often times, when you use more natural products they also include better packaging that is friendlier on the environment. Beauty products like Kjaer Weis, use completely refillable makeup which I love. Just as organic food is better for the environment, so too is organic and truly clean makeup and beauty products. Other ingredients directly affect animals like fish, crustaceans, amphibians and more. All life on earth is dependent on the water cycle. Chemicals transferred to our water system can vaporize into the clouds and come back down as rain. Hence, every living being is affected.

Best Natural Mascara That I Recommend:

100% Pure Mascara:

What I Like:

  • This was the first mascara I used when I first ditched the conventional ones I was using and I continued to use it for years.
  • I really like how it goes on and makes my lashes look full and long.

What I dislike:

  • It tends to get clumpy after about a month or so
  • it also ends up flaking and running which results in that annoying black line under your eye that you constantly need to keep wiping away.

Kjaer Weis:

What I Like:

  • It's refillable along with their whole range of products.
  • It's quite subtle: which is perfect for a soft everyday look.
  • Doesn't smudge

What I Dislike:

  • Not great if you want lots of volume or length

W3ll People Expressionist Mascara:

What I Like:

  • It provides decent lengthening

What I Dislike:

  • Smudged a lot over the day
  • Very hard to remove at night and I don't like rubbing my eye area to remove mascara.
  • I wouldn't repurchase

What I Like:

  • Holds up very well throughout the day
  • Incredible volume
  • No flaking
  • Love the hourglass wand for reaching those hard-to-get lashes

What I dislike:

  • Can be a little hard to apply because of the brush size, it just takes a little practice and patience I find.

Sappho Paradigm Vegan Mascara:

What I Like:

  • Doesn't smudge
  • Lengthens very well
  • Easy to remove

What I Dislike:

  • The formula can be a bit thin
  • Doesn't give as much volume as I like

Lily Lolo Best Vegan Mascara:

What I Like:

  • Doesn't flake or smudge

What I Dislike:

  • The texture was clumpy for me and did not apply well to my lashes.
  • I didn't like this one at all personally and wouldn't repurchase

Hynt Nocturne Mascara:

What I Like:

  • Lengthening and volume was good
  • Good for a subtle everyday look

What I Dislike:

  • Smudged (quite a bit)
  • Could get a little clumpy

Overall, I wouldn't repurchase this one.

Fitglow Vegan Good Lash:

What I Like:

  • Provided decent length and volume
  • Easy to remove

What I Dislike:

  • It can smudge quite a bit
  • The price point is quite a bit higher than others

Ilia Limitless Lash Mascara

  • Provides the best volume and lengthening of any mascara I've tried
  • No smudging or flaking
  • Separates lashes very well

What I Dislike: 

  • It can be very goopy from the bottle because too much excess product comes off.
  • It's hard to apply
  • The brush is a little too big for me.
  • Can be clumpy when applying

Thank you so much for this article. I love tofu but I’m still trying to learn how to use it. I tried the air fryer method but it came out very dry and rubbery. I did spray it with olive oil and spiced it. Maybe frozen tofu isn’t appropriate for air frying. I’m trying to cut back on oils but I’ll try your way! Thank you again ‼️

This is a delicious decadent cake! Do much like a flourless chocolate torte. Only subs I made was a flax egg, and solid heavy coconut cream for the coconut butter. Definitely keep this recipe!

Thank you for this recipe. I modified it a bit because I wanted to have it for breakfast. I only used 1 1/2 tsp of sugar and used oat flour in place of AP flour. I omitted the chocolate chips and topped with an all fruit jam after it finished cooking. Delicious and nutritious. Love it!

Made this recipe for my boyfriend and I on Halloween! It is the perfect fall dish. It is easy to make vegan, nut & gluten free if you use gluten free pasta and do the sunflower seed substitute. My non-vegan boyfriend loved it so much they have asked me to make it again! It is so creamy & has the perfect crunch with the sage and pumpkin seeds.

I made this yesterday and HOLY MOLY it hit the spot!!! It’s been so hot and muggy out here, so I was craving something light, cool, and filling. This recipe did not disappoint. The flavor of the peanut sauce was delicious. It had been a while since I prepared something with such color and flavor, which made eating it that much better. Well I ended up baking them for 23 minutes (@400F). They're delicious! A bit soft, but I'm hoping they'll firm up when they cool. Texture is good too. Thanks for this!

Seems like a good and tasty recipe. But I had to add a generous half cup of water to get any kind of movement in the food processor. I substituted flax seeds for hemp (what I had). The mixture was a bit loose because of the water, but still formed nicely into patties. Baking for 15 min at 400F. Looking forward to them!

Make these now! Once you buy your ingredients, this is the easiest recipe to's so hands off! I started the beef in the instant pot an hour before we wanted to eat and prepped the toppings while all of that was cooking. I used stewing beef and a home-made taco seasoning. I didn't have any beef broth so I used half of a bouillon cube - worked just fine! The enchilada sauce was store bought (Frontera brand) and it was delicious. Highly recommend the Monteray jack cheese - I used some Violife mozzarella that I happened to have at home but I can see how the sharp taste would add to the overall flavour.

Thanks for this! I came across this recipe very late in life, at a family meal. I liked it better than my mother's potato salad of my childhood, and better than my sister's which came from her in-laws. DH likes it very much. Win, win, win! Tip: if you don't want to steam up your summer kitchen nor fight the mosquitoes for the grill, pressure cook the potatoes!

Don’t sleep on this wing recipe. It is soooo good! I can see this being a staple for game days, casual dinners or honestly…any day. Such a crowd pleaser as well. Oh and please don’t skip the dip. It’s unreal stuff! I was grabbing random things in my kitchen to eat it with once the wings were done.

The simplest recipe to make a delicious desert! I left out the cacao and just made vanilla coconut flavor and it was heavenly. I plan to add different flavors in the future; cacao with Orange or raspberry essence, vanilla salted, caramel flour de sel- the options are endless. Glad to find a keto friendly treat that can be made easily at home.

These were good! I've been curious to try making a miso dessert for a little while now, but wanted it to be grain free. I've found that almond flour based chocolate chip cookies always have some kind of nut butter, and since I just use peanut butter, it's like a PB cookie. The miso did a great job replacing nut butter and achieved a great, chewy consistency! It's definitely strong, although I'm sure white miso would have been more mild. I used dashi miso, which in hindsight sounds pretty gross.. the cookies were not at all fishy tasting, but just bold and kind of salty/savory. I think next time I'll try a little less miso. I have a tendency to use less sugar than a recipe calls for, but I definitely needed it in this one to balance the miso flavor. I just used regular butter too, not ghee.

This is the first cinnamon roll recipe i've actually gotten to work! I let the dough rest in the fridge for 4-5 hours and then rolled and filled it, then let it rest in the fridge over night and it worked great for an early morning bake. I looked through the whole recipe and you never mention what temperature to bake at. It just says "place in your preheated oven to bake" I baked at 350. Also it would be really nice if the caramel sauce recipe was included here. All in all totally delicious, worth the effort, and I will be making this again.
