Your Spring Skincare Routine & Makeup Tips

products flat lay

With a new season upon us, it's a good time to spring clean your beauty and skincare products. Not only is it a good time to change your products for your overall look but it's also a good time to readjust the products you're using for your skincare as well. Now that winter is *finally* over (hopefully!), it's time to focus on protecting our skin from different elements. Things like protecting our skin from the sun, protecting our armpits from sweating and wearing makeup that feels light and fresh. Your spring skincare routine is here!

Your Spring Skincare Routine:

Often times when we think of protecting our skin, we think of winter and keeping it hydrated and protecting against the wind. But, it is actually so important to protect our skin year-round. In the summer we have different elements to protect our skin from. One of them is the sun. I am still a proponent of safe sun exposure, I think protecting our face from the sun is so important. If you want to help protect your face from premature aging, wrinkles and sun spots, you need to make sure your skin is protected with SPF.

Here are some of my favourite natural SPF options for your new and improved spring skincare routine!

Suntegrity:

  • This is my favourite sunscreen as of lately!
  • I love the tinted face moisturizer and how it goes on.
  • It moisturizes without feeling heavy or greasy.
  • I used the body one when I was away in Sayulita Mexico earlier this year and it worked great. FYI- I am pretty pale, so I have to be careful in the sun so I don't burn. This provided good coverage and it smells AMAZING. I will say I found the body one a little more on the thick side and it didn't blend 100% in, but I have come to terms with the fact that natural sunscreens just don't absorb the same way as conventional ones. It's just the way it is.

If you're in Canada and looking for a natural sunscreen from The Detox Market, I also love the tinted SPF from Josh Rosebrook, which you can check out here!

Your Spring Skincare Routine: Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate

After a LONG winter, it is really important to exfoliate your skin. To be fair, it is always important to exfoliate, but I find in the winter, we tend to overlook this. The thing is, exfoliating regularly actually helps with skin dryness, a common complaint in the winter, In the spring, exfoliating is also important to ensure you are sloughing off dead skin and making way for refreshed, clear and clean skin. Exfoliating also means buffing your body as well. So don't forget to exfoliate when you are in the shower too!

May Lindstrom, The Clean Dirt:

  • Even after many many years, I'm still very into this product and it's always in my bathroom.
  • I love that it comes in a powdered form which becomes active only when you add water to it.
  • It leaves my skin super smooth, bright and clear every time I use it. I recommend using it around once a week.
  • It's a generous size, so although it's on the more expensive side, it lasts a long time.

Tata Harper, Resurfacing Mask:

  • This is another one of my favourite products to use. It leaves your skin looking really bright, cleansed and clean.
  • To be honest, I am not a huge fan of Tata products, as I find they don't do much for my skin for the price tag, but this is the one exception for me.

Face Masks For Spring:

In the winter, I tend to do a lot of hydrating face masks and in the spring, I will focus on deep cleaning ones as my skin may be prone to a few more breakouts. Overall, I *luckily* don't get too many breakouts, so when I do use a heavier type of cleansing mask, I tend to use it as a spot treatment.

Kypris, Deep Forest Clay:

  • One of my favourites as of late is this one. This clay mask is great for spot treating or for overall detoxing when your skin needs it.
  • If you want to exfoliate only, you can leave it on for less time than a traditional mask.
  • It is ideal for more troubled skin and skin prone to breakouts.

I love Kypris products and although they aren't cheap (I know, I pay for them too), they work exceptionally well. I have tried the glow philtre mask as well, which is amazing and I think would make a nice addition for anytime of the year. It is on my list of products to purchase soon.

Protect Your Eyes:

In the spring, you will likely be spending so much more time outdoors which also means you will be squinting a lot more. If you have sunglasses, obviously it would be best to wear them, but it's possible that all that extra squinting can still result in more wrinkles around the already sensitive eye area. In this case, focus on your eye area with a cream to help minimize the damage.

I love the 100% Pure Bright Eyes Mask for de-puffing, hydrating and brightening.

Spring Cleaning Essentials:

Toss things out that are old. Have a look through your products and see if you find any that you know are a lot older. Chances are they won't be as potent as they once were and it may be a good idea to throw them out. It's also a good idea to figure out after your toss, what you actually need to buy going forward so you don't end up with things that you don't really need, like 3 mascaras... I can't be the only one.

Also, clean your makeup and skincare brushes. I am guilty of not doing this enough, but I am trying to be better at it. It's so important to give your brushes a good clean every few months at minimum.

Makeup Products for Spring:

When it comes to spring time and makeup, I always like to go a bit lighter and let my skin breathe more. To keep it really basic and simple, opt for tinted moisturizer, mascara, a simple lip gloss and a little bronzer for that glow-y look. Also, a good primer doesn't hurt, especially if you want your makeup to last all day.

Favourite lip glosses are these ones from fitglow - they're worth EVERY penny!

I also love this concealer for under eye brightness and coverage from Fitglow.

For a makeup primer, I love this new one from RMS Beauty.

I made this yesterday and HOLY MOLY it hit the spot!!! It’s been so hot and muggy out here, so I was craving something light, cool, and filling. This recipe did not disappoint. The flavor of the peanut sauce was delicious. It had been a while since I prepared something with such color and flavor, which made eating it that much better. I will definitely make this again and try your other recipes too!! 😍🙏🏻❤️

Hi Henrik! Thanks for letting me know you made them. Depending on the size of your food processor, it can be a lot to pulse all at once, so maybe working in batches is better. I'm glad you liked them and they firmed up for you :) Enjoy the rest!

Yep, they firmed up nicely. I'm freezing four, and looking forward to having the other four, dressed with sauerkraut, pickles, mustard, vegan mayo, onions, banana chiles, and maybe even ketchup. Yum!

Well I ended up baking them for 23 minutes (@400F). They're delicious! A bit soft, but I'm hoping they'll firm up when they cool. Texture is good too. Thanks for this!

Seems like a good and tasty recipe. But I had to add a generous half cup of water to get any kind of movement in the food processor. I substituted flax seeds for hemp (what I had). The mixture was a bit loose because of the water, but still formed nicely into patties. Baking for 15 min at 400F. Looking forward to them!

Hi Roxanne! So for the meatballs photos with feta, I just used regular olive oil. But for the one photo with the red looking oil, that was olive oil mixed with fried green onions and Aleppo pepper. I have that recipe in full on my Instagram account - if you head over there, you'll see it - https://www.instagram.com/p/CbQXM2IlH4L/.

Hi! The topping on your whipped feta looked delicious. It appeared to be more than olive oil. Or maybe an infused olive oil? Do you mind sharing that recipe? I can’t wait to make this recipe. Appreciate the tip on room temp feta.

Make these now! Once you buy your ingredients, this is the easiest recipe to execute...it's so hands off! I started the beef in the instant pot an hour before we wanted to eat and prepped the toppings while all of that was cooking. I used stewing beef and a home-made taco seasoning. I didn't have any beef broth so I used half of a bouillon cube - worked just fine! The enchilada sauce was store bought (Frontera brand) and it was delicious. Highly recommend the Monteray jack cheese - I used some Violife mozzarella that I happened to have at home but I can see how the sharp taste would add to the overall flavour.

Hi Carolyn! I'm so glad you are loving my recipes, thank you so much for taking the time to let me know. I don't provide nutritional information as it doesn't align with my brand or how I personally choose to live my life, having had a disordered relationship to food in the past. I hope you understand :)

I love your recipes and have tried them! What would be GREAT is if you could include the nutritional value with calories. It would be beneficial to those of us trying to lose weight. Thank you, Carolyn

Thanks for this! I came across this recipe very late in life, at a family meal. I liked it better than my mother's potato salad of my childhood, and better than my sister's which came from her in-laws. DH likes it very much. Win, win, win! Tip: if you don't want to steam up your summer kitchen nor fight the mosquitoes for the grill, pressure cook the potatoes!

I have these cookies in the oven right now (2nd time making them in a few weeks). They are perfection and will be a great gift for some coworkers tomorrow. I made the recipe as is, great texture! I saved some for me too, don't worry ;)

Don’t sleep on this wing recipe. It is soooo good! I can see this being a staple for game days, casual dinners or honestly…any day. Such a crowd pleaser as well. Oh and please don’t skip the dip. It’s unreal stuff! I was grabbing random things in my kitchen to eat it with once the wings were done.

The simplest recipe to make a delicious desert! I left out the cacao and just made vanilla coconut flavor and it was heavenly. I plan to add different flavors in the future; cacao with Orange or raspberry essence, vanilla salted, caramel flour de sel- the options are endless. Glad to find a keto friendly treat that can be made easily at home.

These were good! I've been curious to try making a miso dessert for a little while now, but wanted it to be grain free. I've found that almond flour based chocolate chip cookies always have some kind of nut butter, and since I just use peanut butter, it's like a PB cookie. The miso did a great job replacing nut butter and achieved a great, chewy consistency! It's definitely strong, although I'm sure white miso would have been more mild. I used dashi miso, which in hindsight sounds pretty gross.. the cookies were not at all fishy tasting, but just bold and kind of salty/savory. I think next time I'll try a little less miso. I have a tendency to use less sugar than a recipe calls for, but I definitely needed it in this one to balance the miso flavor. I just used regular butter too, not ghee.

This is the first cinnamon roll recipe i've actually gotten to work! I let the dough rest in the fridge for 4-5 hours and then rolled and filled it, then let it rest in the fridge over night and it worked great for an early morning bake. I looked through the whole recipe and you never mention what temperature to bake at. It just says "place in your preheated oven to bake" I baked at 350. Also it would be really nice if the caramel sauce recipe was included here. All in all totally delicious, worth the effort, and I will be making this again.
